The “smart meter” technology is not new to LCEC customers but new functionality is added continuously. 
 
In 2002, LCEC installed an automated meter reading system throughout its five-county service territory. Currently, nearly 195,000 &quot;smart meters&quot; automatically provide daily reads of customer usage through a two-way communications system which sends data across power lines.
